LE SAMUEL BECKETT operations in the CENTRAL MED

The crew, prior to LE Samuel Beckett’s sailing for the Mediterranean

Lt Cdr Darragh Kirwan and his crew are joined by Vice-Admiral Mark Mellett, Chief of Staff prior to LE Samuel Beckett’s sailing for the Mediterranean where they have been deployed for the last three months and have rescued in excess of 3,000 people in the Central Mediterranean. This picture was taken at Haulbowline Naval Base, with Cobh in the background, prior to the LE Samuel Beckett’s departure.

You may have noticed that Sinead Kennedy has been missing from Winning Streak for the past few weeks. She has been on a personal mission. As part of a documentary team from RTE she spent a number of weeks on board the ship during operations in the Mediterranean producing the project which comes to our screens at 21:35 on RTE1 on Mon 12th Dec.

This hard hitting documentary shows two sides of the migrant crisis. It shows the plight of the migrants and it also shows how Irish Naval personnel are dealing with rescues under the co-ordination of the Italian Marine Rescue Co-Ordination Centre. There will be “difficult scenes” but I am sure it will be one not to miss.
