Maritime Institute AGM

The Maritime Institute of Ireland held their AGM on Saturday 28 September 2013 in the coffee shop of the museum.  There were 7,000 visitors to the museum, last year.  Birgit Fay Roth, webmaster of, was appointed membership secretary.  There are 160 members.  Des Brannigan called on the institute to fulfill its stated objectives.   Joe Ryan presented his vision of what could be achieved.  Income was €17,000 from entrance receipts and fundraising, however the institute will benefit from a substantial legacy.

The original Lugnad was, according to legend, a "luamaire": that is a navigator or helmsman. He is credited with bringing his uncle, Saint Patrick, to Ireland. Lugnad's grave is in a ruined monastery on Inchagoill island in Lough Corrib, County Galway
